It's hard to be a photographers wife - or at least it is for me at times. My husband is extremely talented and at times, I am found flying on his coat tails. He works mad hours and most of the time, even when he's not at the office, his brain is still doing several creative projects at once and it's hard for him to shut it off. He gets to work with beautiful people all of the time, leaving this vulnerable heart open for insecurity and doubt. Sometimes I wonder if he remembers the beauty he once saw in me. And let's not forget that he travels...and travels...and travels.
On numerous occasions I've been privileged to go with him on shoots, destination weddings and this week, a wedding conference called WPPI that was full of 12,000 or so other brains that see and can imagine more than I ever could. So many times, Chad and I have had the "why do you need to go across the country to be inspired" talks. I've often felt that these people that he calls friends, simply put, weren't. It's hard to fathom how one could get so much fulfillment over the Internet from people he's never met in person - especially enough to feel like "family."
I get it this week! I'm always inspired to watch him shoot. It fascinates me, and sometimes infuriates me all at once because I can't do it. He sees things through a lens that I don't even see with my eyes and more often than not, they come out flawless, even before editing. So, imagine that times 12,000. I get it! I am awestruck with the beautiful talent that I encompassed this week in Vegas. There were amazing images everywhere you turned, but honestly, it's so much more than that.
I was so motivated by discussions that I had with people that are in fact my husbands friends. They knew pieces of me because, unlike my insecurities and doubts, he truly was sharing our life and his love of me with them. So many times this week, I was able to hear, "Melissa, I've feel like we've already met!," or "we've heard SO much about you." People that I had never seen before stopped me in the halls and spoke to me by name. These people ARE his friends. Not only do they create beautiful art together; they INVEST in each other.
"Why do you need to go across the country to be inspired"
I've never compared our jobs - his as a photographer, mine as a stay at home mom. They've always been on opposite ends of the spectrum...until now. Just as my girlfriends and I sit around and discuss how we can be the best at being moms and wives, they invest not only in work, but also how to be the best husbands, wives, friends, followers of Christ. I tell you, it's truly inspiring!
Not only do they create beautiful art together; they INVEST in each other.
With all of that being said, I just want to say THANK YOU! Thank you my sweet Charlie for investing in our love, family and lives even when I'm too proud to see it at times. Thank you for being such a hard working man in all aspects of your life and giving these people, and I, something to look up to and love. Thank you for allowing me to be your partner in life and in this crazy marriage. Thank you for perseverance and pushing through the toughest of times, because we are meant to overcome. Thank you for bringing me on adventures like this, that totally wear me out to the point of illness because I'm overwhelmed by what all is entailed. Thank you to those "those aren't your friends" friends for opening your hearts to me and accepting me as one of your own. Thank you for deep conversations about failing, yet picking myself back up and starting new, about the hardest parts of being a parent, about branding yourself as you ARE, not as you feel everyone else thinks you should be, about faith and embracing the good even in the bad. Those things, the things that this conference was TRULY about - not the gear or technicalities of shooting, will be held dear to me for a very long time to come. I'm thanking God for you all and asking Him to continue to bless you greatly.
